Supreme Court opens with silence

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001

Solicitor General Ted Olson wiped away tears on Monday as the Supreme Court held a moment of silence for victims of September 11's terrorist attacks.

Chief Justice William Rehnquist called for the moment, believed to be the first ever in the court's history. He made special note of Barbara Olson, Olson's wife who died on the plane which crashed into the Pentagon.

Yesterday marked the opening of the October 2001 term of the Court. Among the actions taken was to suspend President Bill Clinton from practicing before the Court.

Clinton has 40 days to show cause why he should not be disbarred. An appeal is expected.

The Supreme Court suspends lawyers from appearing before it regularly.
