MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2001 The Navajo Nation community of Kayenta, located in Arizona, is being watched as a potential model for the rest of Indian Country. Kayenta acts more like a municipality than a reservation town. With a decentralized government, local taxes and welcome mat laid out for entrepreneurs, Kayenta has been a five-year experiment for the nation's largest tribe. The experiment has been considered a success in that nothing has broken down and it has been praised throughout Indian Country. But residents and Navajo officials envision more in the future for the town. The Navajo Nation still has to extend the town's charter, says Kayenta spokesman George Joe. Get the Story:
