JUNE 27, 2001 The New York Assembly on Tuesday failed to act on a bill allowing Governor George Pataki (R) to finalize a gaming compact with the Seneca Nation even though tribal and other business leaders pushed for passage. The Senate had given quick approval to Pataki but lawmakers in the Assembly are questioning the 14-year agreement proposed by Pataki and the tribe. Instead of giving Pataki free reign to finnish negotiations, Speaker Sheldon Silver said the Assembly wants ultimate approval. Get the Story:
