APRIL 2, 2001 Two bills affecting tribal casinos are making the rounds in the Connecticut State Legislature. The Environment Committee on Friday approved a bill that would require a tribe's casino buildings to adhere to state environmental and safety laws if the tribe wants a gaming compact. The bill now goes to the House floor. The Planning and Development Committee on Friday approved a bill describing how to distribute slot machine money to numerous communities. The bill has been in the works for several weeks and it now appears to leave out the municipalities of East Lyme, Colchester and Salem. The towns were part of the original coalition which suggested the bill. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe are expanding their casinos and the bill would distribute the additional expected slot machine revenues to towns most affected by the casinos.
