FROM THE ARCHIVE
APRIL 13, 2001 The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut will open a new slot machine room next week dedicated to the state's forgotten tribes. Called The Hall of the Lost Tribes, it will be located in the former bingo hall at the Mohegan Sun casino. The tribe selected 13 tribes to symbolize disappearance by genocide, disease, war, or assimilation of the tribes. The tribes represented are: Hammonasset, Quinnipiac, Menunkatuck, Tunxis, Siwanog, Saukiog, Machemoodus, Nehantic, Podunk, Weantinock, Wagunk, Pootatuck and Massacoes. Melissa Jayne Fawcett, the tribe's historian, says the hall was partly inspired by the work of a tribal elder, the 102-year-old Gladys Tantaquidgeon, who wants to keep the memories of lost tribes alive.
