FEBRUARY 16, 2001 Despite an effort to increase usage of the coin bearing the likeness of Sacajawea, Americans are still hoarding, not spending the new dollar currency. The US Mint has been encouraging its own employees to use them as well. But at the Mint's Golden Dollar Day event this week, employees said they plan to give them away as gifts or keep them. Meanwhile, the US Mint will mint a new commemorative silver dollar coin based on the historic buffalo nickel to help benefit the National Museum of the American Indian currently under construction in Washington, DC. The US Mint will produce 500,000 of them which will be sold for $33. The museum will get $10 from each sale. Get the Story:
