JANUARY 26, 2001 The St. Croix Ojibwe Tribe on Thursday filed an injunction request in federal court in hopes of blocking the Bureau of Indian Affairs from approving a casino for three other Ojibwe tribes in Wisconsin. The St. Croix is challenging the BIA's "finding of no significant impact" for the Hudson casino. The tribe says the BIA is ignoring negative effects the casino is bound to have on the region. The tribe previously attempted to intervene in a lawsuit filed by the three tribes against the Department of Interior, who had initially denied the casino in 1995. But the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in June said the St. Croix couldn't intervene. The Potawatomi Tribe also sought an injunction but withdrew it yesterday saying they hope the President George W. Bush administration will conduct more study on the project before approving it.
