Opponents doubt Tongva Nation motives

Officials in southern California have begun efforts to kill a bill that would extend federal recognition to the Gabrielino - Tongva Nation.

The opponents say the tribe is seeking recognition to open a casino. The Santa Ynez Chumash Tribe says the Tongva should go through the more rigorous, but timely, Bureau of Indian Affairs process rather thatn seek a legislative solution.

But the tribe says it is not interested in gaming. A provision to add a no-gaming clause to a bill introduced by Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Calif.) might help but Solis says she hasn't even gotten a hearing yet.
