THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2001 A major gaming deal approved by the New York Legislature on Wednesday includes provisions for three casinos in the Catskills and Sen. Charles Schumer believes the Oneida Nation is interested in one of them. If so, Schumer wants the tribe's festering land claim settled. After 25 years in the courts, neither side has agreed to any settlement for 250,000 acres of land stolen by the state. The tribe says it has not been talking with the state about a Catskills casino. In the past, it had sought to open a casino there, but the deal fell through. Proposals by the St. Regis Mohawk and the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohicans of Wisconsin are included in the gaming package. Get the Story:
