FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2001

A federal judge on Thursday ordered Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to issue a final determination of recognition on two Pequot tribes in Connecticut.

The Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe received a preliminary finding in favor of recognition in April 2000. The ruling would have become final after six months but the Clinton administration allowed comments to be extended.

Subsequently, the state of Connecticut filed a suit against the BIA. The judge made his June 4, 2002, deadline as part of those proceedings.
