Meeting to address Indian issues

Facebook Twitter
FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2001

Worried about the possibility of a tribal casino in their backyard, leaders in northeastern Connecticut have invited freshman Congressman Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) to speak a meeting to address various Indian issues.

Simmons is currently mediating a dispute between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and three neighboring towns in southeastern Connecticut. The tribe is offering to limit land-into-trust applications in response to complaints and a lawsuit by the towns.

The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments is calling the meeting because the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts is interested in opening a casino in the area. The tribe received preliminary recognition in January but the decision is on hold pending review by Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb.
