Executions down nationwide

For the second year in a row, executions are down nationwide, according to a review by The Washington Post.

So far in 2001, 48 people have been put to death, down 27 percent from the same time last year. Fourteen more are scheduled in various states and if all take place, executions will have dropped by a third from the 1999 level.

A number of states have curbed execution policies. The Supreme Court has a number of death penalty cases on its slate.
