BIA to explain Pequot recognitions again

JUNE 27, 2001

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to hold a two-day telephone technical assistance meeting next month to explain why two Pequot tribes in Connecticut were granted preliminary recognition.

The BIA last fall had a similar meeting in August to discuss the issue. But along with Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the three Connecticut towns who are challenging the decision say not all of their questions have been answered so they need more information.

Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover signed the decisions on the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe in March 2000. Both share the same reservation in Connecticut.
