JUNE 25, 2001 Reversing a lower court decision, the Supreme Court today ruled that the Fallon-Paiute tribal court lacks authority to hear a lawsuit brought by a tribal member against Nevada state officials. As a general rule, the Court said tribal courts lack power over non-members beyond those which are necessary to protect tribal self-government or to control tribal relations. The judgment was unanimous but with a number of Justices filing various concurrences. Get the Decision Nevada v. Hicks (99-1994):
