JUNE 25, 2001 Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and the leaders of three towns are threatening to delay the federal recognition of two Pequot tribes unless the Bureau of Indian Affairs meets with them. The state says the BIA hasn't lived up to its promise to provide technical assistance on the Pequot recognitions. Without the assistance, the state says it might need yet another six-month extension to consider the Pequot petitions. The state has so far succeeded in delaying a decision on the tribes by a year.
