MAY 21, 2001 The image of marijuana as a relatively harmless drug used by laid-back hippies and college students has long gone by the wayside as violent crime, high prices, and specialized technology have turned pot into a lucrative and dangerous industry. New York City police have been dealing with an increased number of shootings and killings involving marijuana dealers. Authorities last year seized 15,520 pounds of pot last year, three times the amount seized five years ago. High-grade varieties of marijuana sell for $300 to $600 an ounce. Get the Story:
