MARCH 20, 2001 The Wiquapaug Eastern Pequot Tribe on Monday submitted a report to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, claiming they are the rightful descendants of the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe. They say the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe are descendants of non-Indians whom the state placed on the Lantern Hill Reservation in North Stonington. They want the BIA to rescind the preliminary federal recognition the two tribes were granted last March. Should that decision become final, they say they will legal action against the Bureau. The Wiquapaug is not state recognized. The group filed for consideration for federal recognition last fall. The comment period on the two Pequot tribes is set to end on March 28. The state of Connecticut has asked for another 6-month extension to allow for comments. Get the Story:
