Indian rights bill criticized

A bill that would recognize Mexico's Indians and their right to self-deterimination was rejected by the Zapatista rebels in Chiapas and the state's Governor.

Congress finalized its version of the bill on Friday, but included a number of changes seen as weakening the original accords negotiated by the Zapatistas. The Zapatistas have now cut off contacts with President Vicente Fox.

The National Indigenous Congress of Mexico has also criticized the bill.
