In 1995, the number of known cases of diabetes on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North and South Dakota was about 200.

But now there are nearly 800 cases, said John Eagle Shield, director of the tribe's community health program. The high number is one of the reasons why the tribe has started the program, which focuses on exercise and diet.

Statewide, the number of diabetes cases grew 35 percent between 1990 and 2000. Type 2 affects Native Americans and is being seen at younger ages.
