Pope opposes embryo research

After meeting with President Bush in the Vatican on Monday, Pope John Paul II called on him to reject research using human embryos.

"A free and virtuous society, which America aspires to be, must reject practices that devalue and violate human life at any stage from conception until natural death," said the Pope in a statement to Bush.

The Pope wasn't referring directly to Bush's imminent decision on using federal funding for stem cell research. But Bush said he would take the Pope's words into advisement and would not rush to make a decision on the issue.
