American Indian and Alaska Native women in South Dakota have the third worst death rate from heart disease in Indian Country, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study.

The rate for Indian women in the state was 557 deaths per 100,000. The Indian Country average was 259.

Indian men in South Dakota have the worst death rate in Indian Country at 1,140 per 100,000.
