GAO report blasts Yucca Mountain

The General Accounting Office is calling into question plans for a controversial national nuclear waste repository in Nevada.

According to a draft of the report obtained by The Washington Post and other media outlets, the Department of Energy lacks assurances the government would be able to open the Yucca Mountain facility by its scheduled launch of 2010. The draft also states plans being shown to officials might not represent the actual facility.

Nevada lawmakers and officials oppose any proposal to identify Yucca Mountain as a facility for highly radioactive nuclear waste. Area tribes are also fighting the site.
