African animal finds home in N.M.

Defying the estimates of government scientists, the oryx, a native of Africa's Kalahari desert, have adapted so well to the southern New Mexico climate that they are threatening to overrun the White Sands Missile Range.

The oryx was introduced 30 years ago to give game hunters a new animal to hunt. But since the Chihuahuan desert is so similar to their native environment, the oryx has reproduced well and is migrating to Texas and Mexico.

Hunters are now allowed to kill about 1,000 oryx. But it is costly and dangerous to allow more hunting since the range contains sensitive military equipment.
