Alaska Natives opposing herbicide

Several Alaska Native tribes and villages are opposing a request by a Native village corporation to spray herbicides on its logging lands in southeast Alaska.

Klukwan Inc. wants to spray two herbicides on 1,900 acres of timber lands. But the Hydaburg Tribe and other area tribes say the spraying will damage their food sources.

The herbicides -- glyphosate and imazapyr -- are commonly used in other states but rarely sprayed in Alaska. Their use is considered safe when sprayed properly.

The state has initially denied Klukwan a permit, saying the long-term effects are not known.
