THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 The Department of Energy has lifted a ban on the shipment of low-level nuclear waste, which had been put in place the same day of the terrorist acts on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Secretary Spencer Abraham had banned the shipments to ensure against attacks on the hazardous material. Material bound for New Mexico has now been sent on its way, said the department. The department did not tell The New York Times whether high-level nuclear waste is being transported. Get the Story:
