Comments sought on prairie dog shooting

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is seeking public comment on a proposal to allow the shooting of prairie dogs on public land.

The proposal is aimed at both conserving and controlling the prairie dog population. It is also sought to prevent the black-tailed prairie dog from being listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Montana has about 90,000 acres of prairie dog habitat, of which 28,000 acres are on four reservations: Crow, Northern Cheyenne and Fort Belknap. The proposal will not affect shooting on tribal land but on public lands administered by the state.

Four meetings have been scheduled and the FWP is taking comments until October 26.
