Protecting treaty rights, working with other governments and coordinating with other tribes are some of the difficult tasks facing Curt Kalk as head of the Department of Natural Resources for the Mille Lacs Ojibwe of Minnesota.

But Kalk says he doesn't view his job as tough. He was appointed to his post last month by recently elected chairman Melanie Benjamin.

As commissioner, he oversees the tribe's fishing rights on Lake Mille Lacs. The tribe is allowed half the entire walleye harvest on the lake.

The tribe is working with other Ojibwe bands to develop a five-year fishing plan.
