JUNE 29, 2001 By a vote of 265 to 157, the House of Representatives on Thursday approved a measure to block the US Army Corps of Engineers from spending money to allow future oil and natural gas drilling in the Great Lakes. The amendment, proposed by three Democratic members of the Michigan delegation, is part of the $23.7 billion fiscal year 2002 budget bill for energy and water development programs. The House last week approved an Interior spending bill to ban development in national monuments and to delay drilling in an area off the Gulf of Mexico near Florida. Get the Story:
