APRIL 3, 2001 A group of activists held a protest in New York City, New York, on Monday, calling on Peabody Coal to stop mining the Black Mesa area in Arizona. The group held its protest outside the offices of Lehman Brothers. Lehman Brothers invests in Peabody. The protesters today plan on addressing the Lehman Brothers' shareholders meeting. They purchased stock in the company in order to gain admission to the meeting. A company spokesman said they'd be welcome to speak but that there wasn't much the company could do to address environmental and other issues raised by the protesters. Peabody Group, the largest coal holding company in the world, has mined the Black Mesa area for more than 30 years. The company has a lease with the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona to mine the land. Get the Story:
