Controversial bison plan criticized

A controversial bison plan criticized by environmentalists and tribes is now being attacked by Montana officials.

State officials on Monday told Governor Judy Martz that the Department of Agriculture and the National Park Service have been avoiding their duties as part of their agreement with the state. As a result, the situation may get worse, they said.

The agreement caps the bison herd in Yellowstone National Park at 3,000 and attempts to prevent the slaughter of bison and attempts to prevent the transmission of brucellosis to cattle and humans. Brucellosis can cause cattle to abort and can lead to undulant fever in humans. No case of transmission from bison to cattle has ever been reported in the wild, however.
