MARCH 12, 2001 James Vesely, the editorial page editor for The Seattle Times, takes time out today to explain why the paper has supported President George W. Bush but opposes his administration's goal of opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil development. Vesely says the paper believes the need for oil doesn't outweigh the need for wilderness. Despite all the assurances made about drilling, including that it would occur on a very small piece of the refuge, he says any amount of drilling is too much. Get the Story:
