Town doesn't want casino bypass

NOVEMBER 21, 2000

The Connecticut town of Preston is opposing a plan by the state to build a bypass road that would alleviate traffic problems between two tribal casinos.

The state is moving forward with the plans anyway. Along with the US Environmental Protection Agency, they are preparing a final environmental statement on the project, which also includes building a new bridge.

The town says the bypass would open up lands that the Mashantucket tribe would add to its reservation. Along with the state, the town has fought the Department of Interior over its decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the tribe.

A letter to The New London Day written by a local resident says the town will only waste time and money fighting the project and should instead find a conpromise to it.
