OCTOBER 26, 2000 The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has joined the Yankton Sioux Tribe in keeping the Army Corps of Engineers from lowering water levels at Lake Oahe. The Army Corps was supposed to remove all burials from the area in the 1950s. But flooding last year uncovered human remains, indicating the Corps didn't do its job. The two tribes are trying to prevent the exposure of more burials. The Army Corps has said it will not remove any more remains from the site and will fund a study in order to determine how to protect it. Get the Story:
