OCTOBER 13, 2000 The state of Oklahoma and the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations have agreed to form a partnership on deciding water rights in the southeaststern portion of the state. The state and the tribes have disputed over the ownership of water. The state has claimed rights to the water but the tribes have threatened a lawsuit to assert their ownership. The tribes and the state will now form a committee to meet to discuss a water compact addressing those rights. The proposed sale of water to Texas led to the disagreement over water in the state.
