JUNE 25, 2001 South Dakota schools have been gradually changing the way they teach about tribes and events involving tribes. The state Board of Education adopted standards on teach of Indian history in June 1999 but each school district decides how to implement them. Students are supposed to learn about the history of the state, from its first Indian inhabitatants to the present. Students are also supposed to be able to explain how tribes played a role in the expansion of the state. Famous leaders, including Indian ones, are also emphasized. Get the Story:
