APRIL 10, 2001

The Indigenous Language Institute held the Native Youth Language Fair in Santa Fe, New Mexico, this past weekend.

About 185 students made presentations in their Native languages. According to the Institute, only 175 still languages exist today out of 300.

Of those, only 20 are spoken by all ages, 30 are spoken only by adults, 70 are spoken only by grandparents, and 55 are spoken only by those over the age of 70.
