FROM THE ARCHIVE
JANUARY 25, 2001 Nebraska's four tribes on Wednesday put their support behind a state bill that would give unclaimed and unidentified remains to them for reburial. Currently, Native Americans whose tribal affiliation is unknown are given a county funeral. Under the bill, the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs would be responsible for handling unclaimed Indian remains and coordinate which tribe would rebury them. A separate bill would establish a state Archaeology Office which would handle up to two digs a year. No current state office is charged with handling archaeological resources. Both bills are being proposed by Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln. Schimek is also hoping to put a constitutional amendment to allow casino-style gaming on reservations on the legislative agenda.
