Indian student placement examined

Connecticut education officials plan to examine why American Indian and other minority students are placed in special education programs at higher rates than whites.

A 2001-02 study released Wednesday shows that Indian students are identified with emotional disturbance and intellectual disability problems at more than twice the rate of whites. The issue has already been seen in the town of Ledyard, located near three reservations, where state officials questioned the high special education placement rate of Indian students.

The state said the town properly placed the 30 students.
