Activist and artist Charlene Teter was one of several who participated in a seminar on the use of Indians as mascots at the National Indian Education Association conference on Tuesday.

Teters and others said mascots are humiliating, derogatory and demeaning. Mascots can prevent Indian students from learning, they said.

In related mascot news, a community panel in Maryland voted to keep Havre de Grace High School's "Warrior" mascot. The 12-member panel had heard testimony from the Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs, which opposes mascots, and others.
