Tribes to receive remains

The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and the Southern Ute Tribe are among 12 tribes in Colorado, Oklahoma, and the Plains to sign an agreement to receive 350 as-yet-unidentified remains from the Colorado History Museum.

Because the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990 requires a cultural affiliation be made before returning bones to tribes, the group had difficulty in convincing the state to give them the remains. The tribes will decide among themselves how best to identify them.
