SEPTEMBER 1, 2000 Amid widespread allegations of discrimination at the agency, Carol Browner, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, is calling for an investigation into an incident in which an African-American employee was ordered to clean a toilet for her in 1993. Earlier this month, the EPA was ordered to pay $600,000 to a black senior manager. Other employees are planning on filing a class-action lawsuit against the agency, alleging pay discrepancies, harassment, arbitrary performance evaluation, retaliation, and being passed over for promotions. Last week, William Yellowtail, a member of the Crow Tribe of Montana, was suspended from his post as Regional Administration in Denver, Colorado. Yellowtail is the first Native American to hold such a post in the EPA and was alleged to have solicited campaign contributions, a violation of the Hatch Act. Get the Story:
