AUGUST 23, 2000 Jim Traub, candidate for the New York State Assembly, says non-Indians should be protected from any damages or payments arising from the Oneida Nation land claims case. Traub also said the Oneida Nation should be forced to pay taxes to local governments for land it owns in other jurisdictions. The tribe says it doesn't have to pay taxes on land falling within 250,000 acres in Madison and Oneida counties illegaly transferred to the state in the 18th and 19th centuries. Traub made his comments before members of the Upstate Citizens for Equality (UCE), an anti-land claims, anti-sovereignty, anti-treaty rights group. Get the Story:
