JULY 21, 2000 Bernie Whitebear was honored on Thursday at a ceremony at the Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Seattle, which he helped found 30 years ago during a takeover of Fort Lawton. Whitebear's efforts were part of activism during the 1970s aimed at raising national awareness of Native Americans. As founder of United Indians of All Tribes, Whitebear helped address issues facing urban Indians, many of whom moved away from their reservations in search of opportunity or were encouraged by the government to leave. About 500 gathered at the center, including leaders from tribes in the area. A memorial service will be held at today 10 AM at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center at Eighth Avenue and Pike Street. Get the Story:
