FROM THE ARCHIVE
JULY 10, 2000 The Grand Teton National Park has turned down the request of two Shoshone tribal members to hold a Sundance in the park. The National Parks Service said that the ceremony would cause environmental impacts, park resources are inadequate, and a request made by the two tribal members for the park to construct a road to the area and their requests for other services were beyond the agency's duties. There has not been a Sundance held in park since 1868 when the tribe was confined to the Wind River reservation in Wyoming. The Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming accomodates tribal ceremonies, including Sundances, during the month of June. The Parks Service has an voluntary ban on climbing during this month.
