EDITORIAL: No on casino

An editorial in The New Londay Day today says the Rhode Island House Finance Committee made the right decision to kill a bill that would have placed a casino proposal by the Narragansett Tribe on the November ballot.

The editorial states that Connecticut citizens "never got the opportunity to cast their ballots" on tribal gaming.

Due to the terms of the Narragansett's land claims settlement act, Rhode Island assumed civil and criminal jurisdiction over the tribe's lands. State law in Rhode Island requires voter approval of any gaming proposal.

Casino, or Class III, gaming in Connectictut is approved by tribal compacts with the state.
