FROM THE ARCHIVE
JUNE 23, 2000 The Connecticut town of Kent held a forum on Thursday night to discuss issues it may face with the pending bid for federal recognition of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation. Chief Richard Velky protested that he was not invited to sit on the panel, which included representatives from the city of Montville and the towns of Ledyard, Preston, and North Stonington. The Montville Mayor said the city has had nothing but a positive relationship with the Mohegan Tribe. The towns, who are fighting the expansion of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the federal recognition of the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot and Eastern Pequot tribes, spoke of the negatives they have faced. Kent's attorney said fighting the Schaghticoke's recognition would be the most expensive avenue. Get the Story:
