JUNE 15, 2000 Having won 62 percent of the vote, Melanie Benjamin has been elected the new chairwoman of the Mille Lacs Ojibwe tribe in Minnesota. Benjamin defeated incumbent Marge Anderson, the nationally acclaimed leader who helped lead the tribe to financial success.
