Reservations respond to Census

Did the big push for accurate Census 2000 counts for Native Americans have a positive effect? According to the Census 2000 Initial Response Rates updated yesterday, 26, out of a total sample of 119, reservations have met or exceeded their target response rate.

The Navajo Nation, for example, exceeded their 13% target response rate, showing an initial response rate of 34%.

Target response rates for reservations vary from 100% for the Sycuan reservation in California, to 70% for the Oneida reservation in Wisconsin, to 5% for the Salt River reservation in Arizona. The national target response rate is 70%.

Reservations with low initial response rates include the Sycuan at 40% (target rate: 100%), the Big Valley Rancheria in California with 3% (target: 35%, and the Mille Lacs reservation in Minnesota with 29% (target: 70%).

Three reservations, the Blue Lake Rancheria, Jamul Village, and Stewarts Point Rancheria show an intial response rate of 0%.

Nationally, 64% of homes have returned their mail-in form.
