Tribes end 'suicide' boycott

AUGUST 15, 2000

The Colville Confederated Tribes of Washington ended their boycott of the Omak Stampede, Okanogan County's largest annual event, in Omak this year.

Last year, the tribes boycotted because they said Stampede organizers weren't giving them enough input. The majority of past participants in the Suicide Race, which involves racing a horse down a steep hill and across a river, were tribal members.

The tribes also put on a powwow at the Stampede. Last year, they held their own event as part of the boycott.

The County canceled some of last year's events, including the race, and lost about $52,000. This year, ticket sales were still lower than normal.
