JULY 21, 2000 The success of the Borrego Springs Bank, owned by the Viejas Tribe of California is helping raise interest in banking by tribes and others in the financial community. The 450-member tribe bought the bank in 1996 thanks to profits from their casino. It has assets and deposits worth $70 million and $5.8 million in shareholder equity. Other tribes are seeking to establish their own banks or follow the same path as the Viejas. The North American Native Bankers Association is an organization of the 10 tribal-owned banks in the United States and Canada. Get the Story:
